Several days had passed since the debacle in Jian Ye, but it was already a distant memory for Liang Xun. Mainly because, all things considered, it was relatively uneventful. The young advisor to Zhou Yu was now back in Shou Chun acting as the Prefect in his friends absence. Many wondered why he sought no higher ranking within Wu, but they needn’t look any further than situations like this.
Bothersome responsibility? Check.
Unpredictable hours? Check.
Ornery subordinates and/or citizens? Double Check.
Xun sighed, aloud, as he listened to yet another altercation being brought to his attention. He was seated in the main chamber of the palace where audiences could be in attendance. How he loathed this on one hand, but also utterly enjoyed it on the other.
[Yellow]“Milord, he’s lying to you! I caught his dog in the act of eating my chickens! Look at the animal! It has cuts all over its face from them trying to escape!”[/Yellow] The sour citizen bellowed at Liang Xun his complaints, while the defendant and animal in question stared at him in disbelief.
[Orange]“You are the liar! My dog’s face is distorted because you let those heathens of yours run around the town freely! They abuse everyone’s animals!”[/Orange] His jab was taken in theatrical fashion by the complainant, whose face slowly evolved from a pink to a blistering red, cheeks swelling up with air. His eyes looked almost ready to explode in their sockets when Liang Xun spoke on the matter, which was now reaching the half hour mark.
[Maroon]“Taio Jiang and Fu Zhui, I’ve listened to what you both have to say – for half an hour, I might add – and, well, I’ve made a decision.”[/Maroon] The young advisor was pleasant, his tone honest and his smile sincere. [Maroon]“You are both to tie up your nefarious companions whilst unattended.”[/Maroon]
Taio Jiang, the man whose face was returning to normal, slowly, looked confused for only a brief moment before speaking out. [Yellow]“Master Xun…I don’t have a pet.”[/Yellow] His eyes expressed genuine confusion and incomprehension, which almost made the stand-in Prefect change his calculated response.
[Maroon]“Mister Jiang, how old are your children?”[/Maroon]
[Yellow]“Two of them are six, while the oldest is nine… Why do you ask?”[/Yellow]
There was a pause while he considered once more his response. In the end, he felt this was appropriate.
[Maroon]“I was referring to them, and the ruling still stands. On a side note, I’d strongly suggest you halt that assembly line for a while.”[/Maroon]
