Taishi Ci was far from his stewardship. He was rummaging around in the south of Wu, away from civilization. He had heard tales while campaigning in the region of great gray beasts with snouts longer than men, and tusks that were longer than spears. He knew immediately that they spoke of the elusive elephant, and that taming and utilizing these beasts could prove fruitful for Wu.
So, with a large following of men, spears, nets and horses all amongst them, they looked for the gray behemoth. They brought with them spades to dig with, and rope to handle the elephants with. They were prepared, as Taishi had read up on the techniques of capturing these behemoths within the libraries of Wu.
He sat on his horse, looking at the jungled area around him. His horse whinged and he patted it gently before dismounting, driving his spear into the ground in the same motion. He grabbed a spade, and shoved it into the ground, lifting and throwing the soil to the side. He motioned the first group of men who immediately set into digging a hole with a steep incline. Taishi moved on to dig four or five more holes very close around the initial hole. All the holes were covered with debris, camouflaging them.
He circled his men, and leaving through the cleared path they had come through, they set up camp 10 minutes away, and waited. Taishi had the men rest, as he knew the next steps would be the worst, stress wise, on the men, and he fully expected to lose some of those that had followed him that day. These beasts were not to be fucked with.
Taishi awoke in the middle of the afternoon, the sound of large crashes and what can only be described as the most horrible sound imaginable, a castrophony so intense he wondered if Quan could hear it in Jian Ye.
He immediately mounted, his men following suit, and he tore down the path.
What he saw was 5 perfectly laid traps sprung, but what he also found was a few extra pissed off elephants. Immediately his horse reared, and Taishi held on with all his strength. His horse fell down but backed away slightly, its entire body trembling at the elephants, Taishi's will the only thing keeping it from running away. His men held spears, ropes, and their shovels as they heard the whinging of the elephants stuck in the holes, and the three elephants that rampaged above, trying not to fall into the holes with their comrades.
Taishi immediately split his groups, three main groups with two wings each, and they took off, spears used only as a deterrent from rampaging through his men. Nets were thrown over the elephants, inhibiting them enough while other men threw ropes around the elephants tusks an heads. Men were bucked, thrown into the forest, only to appear a few minutes later dazed, but ready to go again. Unfortunately a few of the volunteers were stomped, their bodies pulped by the crashing of the feet.
Taishi grabbed a rope and his spear, and pushed his horse forwards. It galloped at first hesistantly, but then tore off with his master. Spinning the rope as he rode circles around the elephant, he threw the rope, landing around the great beast's tusk. He pulled it tight, then felt his horse leave from underneath him. Thinking his horse bucked him, he was startled to see the elephant rearing, and he being brought with it, his death hold on the rope flinging him high into the air. He quickly curled more of the rope around, as he landed ontop of the beast, almost losing his spear.
He pulled the rope, gathering it before standing up ontop of the rampaging elephant. His men around him cheered, which caused the beast to trample around more, men skittering out of the way. Taishi moved to the thing's neck, and threw another rope around, as it curled up around the otherside he grabbed it. With all his might, planting both feet at the base of the elephant's skull, he pulled up, the rope pressing around the thing's neck. It was in no danger of choking; its skin was very dense.
However, he was dominating it. It reared again, but he held on, pure force keeping him attached to the beast, his own muscles bulging as he felt the burn of acid on his muscles. His arm popped, but with sheer will the beast finally stopped, Taishi falling onto the beast's head. It heaved, men around it quickly tying ropes to its legs and staking them into the ground, large rocks placed onto the rocks. However, the beast did not move. Taishi slid down, holding his arm, with a great push he popped it back into place, a quick yelp escaping his lips before he turned to the gigantic beast.
It stared at him, nearly twice the size of its brethren that had been netted and staked down, and its comrades within the holes in the ground. Taishi held his spear in one hand, and stood in front of the behemoth pachyderm in front of him. He stared into its black eyes, which bore back into him. He walked another step forwards.
The beast stood resolute.
"Tell me, old one... How many of your kind roam these woods? I dare say there are more than those in attendance..."
Taishi switched hands with his pole, and brought a hand onto the tusk of the Elephant. He felt its slick ivory, buffed on tree trunks no doubt. He patted the elephant.
"You will come to call me master. It is but time. I have already caught you, now I will break you."
Taishi walked away; as did all of his men. They left the area, the elephants screaming into the night as the men feasted. The next day they brought the elephants food, leaving it there just within their grasp. The elephants ate hungrily, and Taishi's men left.
The next day, the same.
Then the next. and the next. Then they stopped.
The elephants wailed for three days straight.
Taishi returned. He ordered the ropes cut, and the biggest one charged towards him. It stopped but meters from Taishi, in his hand a ripe fruit. It greedily snatched it from his hand, and began chewing on it. He walked over, and it bent down onto its knees. Taishi grabbed he small ear, and flung himself onto its neck. It roared in triumph, and the other elephants were mounted, the ones stuck brought up by digging a ramp down to them, where they gratefully let one of Taishi's men jump onto them.
Taishi let the Cow elephant lead him to the rest of the heard, which stared at Taishi and his mounted men angrily. The elephant let loose a blare from its trunk, its voice ringing out. The elephants fell in line behind it, and Taishi and his new elephant corps walked out of the forest, and to the north.
