Day One
Liang Xun departed the palace with haste, knowing that his mission to be completed properly would require a great deal of preparation and time. However, he was not the type to outwardly express much, so his exit was more of a brisk walk than anything else. He passed many citizens inside and outside the palace, hoping to meet with Zhou Yu and express their concerns. While he certainly didn’t envy his friends political obligations, he was still a little sour over the foot massage request. So, the heads up that his private quarters were open to all was merely karma, in his mind.
He arrived at the local barracks after asking around for directions, while his mind played through the multiple repercussions he’d face for divulging such information. Oh well, he thought.
There were dozens of people in the barracks, ranging from the grizzly looking veterans recounting their tales of victory to the obviously naïve new recruits, who still had that glow of excitement in their eye. Liang Xun, a man of medium build, looked relatively plain amongst this group, and gave a sigh of discontent. He’d hoped his arrival would garner some attention, but alas he wasn’t Zhou Yu himself, so the general populace didn’t give a rat’s ass.
Putting on his best business-man face he circled the room, asking the varying groups for volunteers to help with a task specifically requested from their new prefect. He was met with mixed results; however, once he mentioned compensation his following grew much larger. Once the following reached around fifty strong-able bodied men, he ushered them outside to give their orders.
[Maroon]“Alright, I’ll be brief. Our orders are to build a pair of watchtowers on the outside of the river, by the only path into Shou Chun. I presume I don’t have to explain why this is necessary? Good. Now, we’ll need plenty of lumber for this, so you all are to depart immediately. West of here, before you reach Ru Nan, is the closest forest. All you’ll need for your journey and harvesting is already prepared at the stables. You’re all dismissed.”[/Maroon]
As the men dispersed, heading for the stables, Xun stopped a younger soldier. To call him young in comparison would be unfair, as he was probably the same age as Xun himself, but there was no denying he’d never seen the fields of battle – not yet. [Maroon]“Gao Shiang, is it? You mentioned your father used to build ships for Wu earlier?”[/Maroon]
[White]“Yes, sir. The very ones used to defeat Wei at Chi Bi. Why do you ask?”[/White] Gao Shiang replied, eyeing Liang Xun with a hint of suspicion. After all, he wasn’t heading towards the stables. The young advisor smiled the smile that made him a convincing politician, and placed his hand on the others shoulder. [Maroon]“Excellent – could you direct me to his home? If we’re to build suitable watchtowers we’ll need someone who has experience with construction.”[/Maroon]
The young soldier’s suspicion palpably dissolved as he explained where their home was, before departing for the stables. Liang Xun sighed heavily as he followed Gao Shiang’s directions, a hand scratching the back of his head. He knew that his friend had entrusted him with this task for get him familiar with the populace, but oh how he loathed having to run around the city. It was moments like this that made him wonder why he never pursued a more respectable position with Wu. But, he arrived at the house just in time to put that thought back where it came from, for pondering later.
When the elder Shiang answered the door, Xun quickly explained his offer. Being the loyal Wu citizen that he is, the elder Shiang was more than happy to contribute his knowledge to the construction.
And so Liang Xun accompanied the elder Shiang to the location he’d decided upon for the watchtowers. The pair hashed out all the details, including the watchtower layout and the method of construction, before returning to the city.
