On a small boat in the Yangtze river...
“Do you see that ship boy?”
“You mean the one sealed in gold?”
“Yeah, that is Cao Cao’s flagship. It’s beautiful isn’t it?”
The boy looked up at the ship for a moment and then looked back at the old man beside him, “yeah.” He replied, “But why are we leaving, you said you would show me something that would change things.”
The old man smiled as he led the raft further away from the chain of ships, “Oh you will see something boy, something spectacular.”
“And what is it I will see?”
“Destiny.” He replied, “Destiny in its most real form, you will see the change you have wanted since you were a baby.”
“A change?” The boy mused for a second, gazing off into the distance. “What sort of change?”
“One that you will appreciate in due time.” The old man laughed and rowed the raft towards the centre of the great ocean. Now, both sides of the river were filled by boats, some led by Wei, others by the Sun/Liu alliance. “You see, Cao Cao is strong, mighty even. He is a warmonger, a man that soars higher than any gate I could ever build, but today his ambition will fail him – what you will see is a sway in the tide of battle, my boy.”
“But you fight with Wei in mind, master?” The boy hesitated for a second, and then turned back to the ocean. He could see that a boat was approaching the Wei fleet, a general standing at its fore – clad in black and red armour with a cold, undaunted expression plastered across his face.
“What is going on?” He asked, “I’m so confused.”
The old man pushed the boat further away and then settled down, “I support no one. “ He said at first, “But I do support an idea, a dream so to speak.”
He turned to the boy now, his eyes carefully etched into his worn like face, “Since the fall of Dong Zhuo Cao Cao has grown, not just in the number of cities he plants his flag, but as a person aswell. He appears almighty in his rise to power, almost incomparable in a way – yet he is not alone.”
He gestured a hand at the Liu/Wu alliance, “Sun Quan's navy is unmatched, small, yet powerful, such is the nature of Wu. His ally, Liu Bei, has fought Cao on several occasions and still lives today... You see, Cao Cao the mighty, Sun Quan the young and Liu Bei the hero create a Triumvirate, one cannot exist without the other – they’re entwined in the very fabric of our destiny, they exist, they fight and they kill to bring about an order, a dream and notion. But, Liu Bei does not possess the power to accomplish his goals alone, which is why you see what you see.”
He pointed back towards the ship that had crossed their path, the single Wu boat that slowly edged closer to the ranks of Wei.
“Sun Quan and Zhou Yu have created this, they have planned this – and they will execute it.”
They turned together as the first sparks erupted from the small raft – a crimson warrior cried and others soon fell from the ship. A fire burned, large and gluttonous, consuming all it could before raiding the next boat in a forever chain of fire.
“War consumes all my child, there is no ignoring its embrace – no avoiding its fate.”
“But why?”
“Because that is how it must be, you will see soon enough – why this is not a sight of pain and misery, but a sight of hope – this is the Triumvirate, it must be this way. Soon you will understand.”
Then the boy watched as the fire crippled the Wei fleet in all of its glory....watched as it all began....
