While Zhang Fei was in the palace to see his brother, Bao Zhao and the remaining officers were allowed to take their rest. Most of them were grumpy because of the hunger. Bao Zhao quickly finds himself alone, with the others all going to the nearby bars, hotels and red light district to satisfy their needs. War would only bring the worst up in men and Bao Zhao knew that ever since he met Zhang Fei. The man was able to whip his own soldiers who were willing to die for him in the field. When he thought about it, it was quite unbelievable he was still following Zhang Fei around. But the battle of Chi Bi was decisive for the survival of both Liu Bei and Sun Quan and so even the Gods must have some kind of plan for these men. Bao Zhao was determined to help the Gods, even if it meant serving a fool of a man.
This was also the reason why Bao Zhao hardly ever spoke to the people when his master was around. Everything he would say would be turned back to him when Zhang Fei was there to embarrass him and make him look like a fool. He had tried it once, but had also realized that he also needed some time off from his master. The man could hardly ever get tired and was always prepared to jump into another party or fight. Bao Zhao was getting too old to keep making such long nights. Perhaps tales of the battle of Chi Bi could convince some young fellows to become his personal bodyguard, so he could teach these men and thus create a professional 'babysit' unit for Zhang Fei.
Not knowing much about the city, Bao Zhao had decided not to let his horse rest in the stables at the palace. Who knows there were Wei or Wu soldiers who had hidden inside the city. On higher ground like this, these men would think twice before attacking. Though if they knew Bao Zhao had never killed a man, they would not hold back. Bao Zhao had always bluffed and talked his way out of any dangerous situations he came in when he was by himself. he was gifted with a swift tongue and knew he had some sort of charisma that called the attention of crowds. He could never quite grasp what it was, but he had used it several times before and had also learned from the way Liu Bei spoke to the people. And that was the man who convinced an entire city to follow him around!
Knowing that despite the victory of Chi Bi the army of Zhang Fei had been quite obliterated, Bao Zhao was determined to find some fresh new privates. The city was not very large and the most people were walking, standing and talking on a square near a temple. Bao Zhao clears his throat and spreads his hands out to the crowd. Without having spoken a word, several eyes turn to the mounted man and stop to speak. The attention was already growing and Bao Zhao could feel their eyes scanning him. "It's now or never," was all he could think.
"People of Chang Sha! I am Bao Zhao, an officer of the army of Liu Bei. It is obvious you have all heard about the battle of Chi Bi that has raged on several days ago. Many valiant men have died fighting the masses that Cao Cao had brought to Jing. I have witnessed that massacre but have also seen the horrors that Cao Cao and his massive army left behind when they were travelling. Over a million men need a lot of food and space and it did not matter much, or even you had felt the burden of such an army.
Ask around if you want, you will all hear the same. The South is better off without Cao Cao. Today, my lord Liu Bei has sworn to avenge the deaths of so many people. Cao Cao must be punished and the punishment begins here, today. Men of Chang Sha, God is calling you forth to aid Liu Bei in his fight against the Devil! Come and follow me now and I will bring you to meet him. I will guarantee that just like me, you will be able to follow this man to hell and back after you have seen his kindness and goodness. Who is willing to join me in the greatest adventure of our time?!"
